Your Book Donations Make a Difference!
The Books for Teachers program promotes literacy, assists with the curriculum and fosters a love of reading. It promotes the library as a resource for both teachers and students. Books for Teachers targets schools in the Tucson area with 50% or more Title I students qualifying for free or reduced fee lunches.
Scholastic Purchase Program
For the 2019-2020 school year, the Friends provided funds for two Books for Teachers programs. The first was called the Scholastic Purchase Program:
- Grants of $52 each to teachers to buy books for their classroom on Scholastic.com (Book Clubs and TeacherStore)
- 904 teachers in 50 Tucson-area elementary and K-8 schools got the grants
- A total of $46,000 was granted
Special Projects Block Grants
Special Project grants were used for these purposes:
- School Library – books and materials for the general population of students
- Reading Lab – books and materials for teaching specialists to use for students requiring reading help
- Books for Students to Own – outright gifts to students to take home
- Literacy In Tucson (LIT) Grants – school grants to test new ways to promote literacy
- Project READy Grant – designed to get pre-schoolers ready for kindergarten
- Parents As Teachers Grant – supported the Parents As Teachers program

- We gave out grants to 50 schools
- Grants ranged from $200 to $1500
- The grants total was $30,000
A reading specialist commented that
the larger collection has improved student involvement in reading which includes the ability to choose a suitable book and the stamina to read a book cover to cover.
